Treatment by Douglas Tonkin.
Days and Weeks.
The film starts in total darkness and then some movement may be detected as light enters to the right of the screen. As the light increases, a living room is gradually revealed which appears to be very disordered. We are shown the lower half of a man's body, clothed in scruffy pyjamas. When this man walks away from us, we see him sit down on a sofa with a bowl of cereal which he proceeds to consume. The entire scene is only illuminated by a lamp. We see the edge of the doorway to the room and then the whole scene fades to black.
When the scene is relit, we see the same room in its entirety with the same man now dressed in a smart suit, the cereal bowl in his hand having been replaced by a smart briefcase. The camera swings to the doorframe and we return to total blackout.
When the scene is relit, we again see this room but now unoccupied except for a single scruffy dog chasing its tail. Total blackness descends again and when the room is relit we see the dog running towards the camera and the man we saw earlier is entering the room again. The dog jumps up at the man and knocks his briefcase out of his hand so all his papers fall from it and are scattered across the floor.
Again, total blackness descends on the scene and when the room is relit we see the same man again, dressed in casual clothes and now sitting with friends watching TV.
Blackout again and then, when scene is relit, a single movement of the camera reveals the man alone decorating his Christmas tree with presents. Total blackness returns and then we see the room relit with the man eating his Christmas dinner, all alone except for the dog beside him eating scraps that have been left for him on the floor.
Fade to black again and then, when the room is relit, we observe several changes that have taken place. The room now looks as though it has been set for a New Year's Eve party with many guests already "in situ". The next shot of the room, relit after yet another fade to black, reveals the man picking up the wreckage of the party from his floor next day.
Throught out the running of this, there is music playing continuously - with no vocals, just an instrumental recording.
